Example text

Peter’s reply was Dad’s favorite verse: “Lord, to whom shall we go? ” All this came back to me as I sat by the fireplace that early spring morning of 2006. With fresh impact, I realized God was telling a story, a love story, that begins in chapter 1 (Genesis), continues for sixty-four chapters (Exodus through Jude), and reaches its climax in chapter 66 (Revelation). And I prayed, “God, will You tell me what You want me to hear in each of those chapters? I want to know Your story. I want to be a part of Your story.

And I don’t want you to be afraid that things in your life will go wrong—they will—or that you will feel empty—you will. If you fear problems or emptiness, you will live for comfort and fulfillment. And that will just complicate the mess you’ve already made. “Did you ever stop to ask why I made everything; why My Spirit, My Son, and I created the stars, moon, planets; and why We made paradise on earth? The three of Us were making preparations to throw a party, to invite others to a dance, to the dance We’ve been enjoying since before time began.

Okay, I thought, I’ve mastered the first half of that verse. I’m miserable. Now how do I move to the second half? How do I earnestly seek God? The question itself jarred something loose in me. I realized I had been assuming it was His job to seek me. I was the lost sheep, baa-baaing alone in the night. Isn’t that the cue for the Good Shepherd to leave the ninety-nine and come looking for me? (Matthew 18:12). I could feel the angry, spoiled-brat passivity behind that assumption. A flame of hope began to melt the ice covering my heart.
