8 mm flat specimens cut out by spark-erosion. A heating rate of 50°C was achieved by induction whereas a cooling rate of about 100°C/s was performed by means of a highpressure helium gas spray. The heat-treatment was carried out under vacuum to restrict decarburization of the samples. The length change of the specimen was continuously monitored during the holding stage to study the rate at which bainite forms. Introduction TRIP-assisted steels exhibit a characteristic microstructure composed of retained austenite islands dispersed in a ferritic base matrix.

Welding, hot extrusion, hot forging, hot rolling are examples ofthis type of industrial processes. In thermal treatments the long holding times at the austenitizing temperature make sure that the austenite has practically reached its equilibriwn grain size. This is not the case for welding and the other hot forming processes in which austenite is out of thermodynamic equilibrium.
