This is short sighted because these people are needed from the start to resolve technical problems and to provide direction from this project feasibility or pre-feasibility start through to the end of ramp-up (through the entire start-up period). If the owner’s team is small and only meets intermittently with the engineering consultants, the outcome is pre-ordained to be deficient. There is another problem that has become prevalent in the industry. The larger major firms used to have large inhouse engineering groups.

Further cost cutting occurs when fewer spares are installed or ready to install than necessary for start-up, but sufficient for a mature operating plant. All in all, the philosophy forced on the feasibility by the owner’s management and feasibility team will have a major effect on the ability to start up the plant. An Inadequate Start-Up Team The team that starts up the plant has a very direct effect on the ramp-up curve. This team must comprise engineers and staff that: • Have been on the project from the start of the feasibility for the engineering consultant and from the start of scoping for the owner’s team, • Should be augmented by at least one start-up specialist from its cadre of engineers, • Should have people from other operations if it has any (major and mid-tier players).
