LOFFREDO, G. CENNAMO, A. DE LELLIS, A. SAMMARTINO and A. DELPRETE (Naples, Italy) ABSTRACT It is well known that in clinical practice the corneae from eyes enucleated for malignant melanoma of posterior choroid are usually utilized for corneal grafting.
This research refers to cases of posterior melanomas which extended anteriorly, in which the utilization of the corneae for grafting was doubtful. Echographic study of the tumour and of the surrounding tissues was useful in detecting: 1) the infiltration of tissues; 2) the Bruch's membrane breaking; 3) the vitreous changes, characterized by its high reflectivity. All these conditions were accompanied the presence of tumour cells in the aqueous humour and so the echographic findings may advise against the use of the corneae from such melanomas for grafting.
